A Breath of Snow and Ashes (2005)

The year is 1772, and the long fuse of insurrection has already been lighted on the eve of the American Revolution. In the backwoods of North Carolina, solitary homes burn in the bush, and men lie dead in the streets of Boston.

The governor summons Jamie Fraser to unify the backcountry and protect the colony for King and Crown as chaos brews. Jamie, on the other hand, has learned from his wife that three years from now, the shot heard around the globe will be fired, resulting in independence—with those loyal to the King either dead or exiled. There’s also a short clipping from The Wilmington Gazette from 1776, which details Jamie’s death and that of his relatives. He hopes that his time-traveling family is mistaken about the future for once.

“Triumphant. . . . Her use of historical detail and truly adult love story confirm Gabaldon as a superior writer.”—Publishers Weekly
