Phil Connors is the pompous and egotistical weatherman for Pittsburgh’s WPBH-TV. He despises both people with whom he works and his audience. But he despises Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, which he will cover for the fourth time in his career, this time with Rita and Larry, the station’s new producer and cameraman, respectively. Phil wants to get out of Punxsutawney as soon as possible, but a snowstorm compels the threesome to stay an extra night in town following the Groundhog Day celebrations. When Phil awakens the next morning, he believes he is having déjà vu. In fact, he is reliving Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. The same thing happens the next day and the next. Phil has a variety of highs and lows as he relives the same Groundhog Day again and over. But, as he realizes that Groundhog Day may be his fate for forever, he also realizes that his actions have no long-term effects, but that knowledge, particularly as it relates to Rita, may be a powerful and dangerous thing. But he is given chance after chance to do the day “right.”
