Magic Elantris (2005)

Raoden is cursed by an ancient metamorphosis known as the Shaod and secretly banished to the city of Elantris.

Book details

Elantris was Arelon's capital: massive, beautiful, literally radiant, and full of benevolent beings who used their powerful magical abilities to benefit all. Yet, these demigods were once ordinary people until the Shaod's mysterious transforming power touched them. The magic failed unexpectedly ten years ago. Elantrians grew wise, leper-like, and powerless, and Elantris became dark, filthy, and crumbling.

Kae, Arelon's new capital, huddles in the shadow of Elantris. Princess Sarene of Teod arrives for a state marriage with Crown Prince Raoden, hoping to find love based on their correspondence. Instead, she discovers that Raoden has died and that she is now considered his widow. Teod and Arelon are both under threat as the last remaining holdouts against the imperial ambitions of Fjordell's ruthless religious fanatics. So Sarene decides to use her newfound power to foil the schemes of Hrathen, a Fjordell high priest who has come to Kae to convert Arelon and claim it for his emperor and god.

But neither Sarene nor Hrathen suspect that Prince Raoden is telling the truth. Raoden, cursed by the same curse that destroyed Elantris, was secretly exiled to the dark city by his father. His struggle to help the wretches trapped there sets in motion a chain of events that will give Arelon hope and possibly reveal the secret of Elantris itself.

Elantris is a rare epic fantasy that does not recycle the classics and is a complete and satisfying story in one volume. It is fast and fun, full of surprises and characters to care about. It's also the triumphant debut of a bright new star in the constellation of fantasy.
