Tenet is a 2020 action thriller film directed and written by Christopher Nolan, who also produced it alongside Emma Thomas. It is a British-American co-production starring John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Michael Caine, and Kenneth Branagh. The film depicts a secret operative who learns to influence the flow of time to avoid a future attack that threatens to destroy the present planet. For both the production and distribution of the picture, Nolan maintained his ties with Warner Brothers and Syncopy.
After pondering Tenet's basic themes for nearly a decade, Nolan took more than five years to compose the screenplay. Pre-production began in late 2018, and Hoyte van Hoytema, the film's cinematographer, shot on 65 mm film and IMAX. Hundreds of ships and thousands of extras were deployed.
Tenet, delayed three times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was released in the United Kingdom on August 26, 2020, and in the United States on September 3, 2020, in IMAX, 35 and 70 mm. It was the first Hollywood tentpole to release in theaters following the epidemic, collecting $363 million worldwide, making it the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2020. The film earned largely excellent reviews from critics. It was nominated for Best Visual Effects and Best Production Design at the 93rd Academy Awards.
