"The future ain't what it used to be."

Nobody remembers Mike Marcum?

Chrono Cadet
The only official time travel was done by Mike Marcum , I wonder why no one remembers him.

His Story:

In early 1995, Mike “Madman” Marcum attempted to construct a time machine on the porch of his house in Stanberry, Missouri, in the United States. He started working on a contraption called the Jacobs Ladder.

It reduces air resistance between two poles by using a modified Compact Disc laser. The result will be a continuous arc. When he turned on the device, he saw something unusual.

There was a heat mark, similar to what you’d see on hot pavement, except it was in the shape of a vortex and was circular. So he decided to test the effect by throwing a sheet metal screw through the vortex to see what would happen. According to him, it vanished for half of a second before reappearing a few feet away a second later.

At that time he was only 21 years old and he was a student majoring in electricity. When compared to his friends, Marcum can be said to be quite intelligent. Apparently, Marcum tried to build a time machine because he wanted to get the winning lottery numbers from the future. However, he had one problem that he needed a lot of power to make it work.

After a few more tests, the CD laser caught on fire. He figured if he was going to rebuild the machine again, he might as well use larger transformers.

His original plan was to purchase the transformers, but they are quite expensive. He resorted to the alternative. At the local power station, there were 6 old transformers. Marcum stole six 300-plus pound transformers from a St. Joseph Light and Power generating station in King City, Mo.

While testing his experiments, he caused a mass blackout several blocks throughout his neighborhood. A few moments later, Gentry County Sheriff Eugene Lupfer arrest him with a warrant inside his house on January 29, 1995, for stealing the transformers.

After several months in prison, Marcum was released. And then he was invited to become a guest for Art Bell on Coast to Coast Radio. He tells the story of the screw and his plans to build a time machine. He vows that from now on he will do it legally.

Marcum told Art that he is still wanted to create another experiment but had neither money nor spare parts. During the interview, he gave his phone number and received non-stop calls for 3 days. The show helped Marcum a lot because many listeners shared him with ideas, funding, and spare parts.

With his listeners’ help and donations, his next time machine project was more powerful and much bigger than the previous one. While the original engine ran at the kilowatt rate, this time it was designed for 3 megawatts. Because he wanted to test the machine on himself.

Also, Marcum installs a rotating magnetic field similar to the one that the US military used in the Philadelphia Experiment. He said that rotating magnetic fields are more effective and efficient.

Art Bell had Mike Marcum as a guest again about a year later. Marcum claimed to be experimenting with a more sophisticated time machine. The electromagnetic vortex was big enough for a man to walk into.

The interview ended with Marcum claiming to be on the cusp of generating the desired amount of voltage to run the machine. When asked what he would take with him, he replied just his cell phone. At the end of the show, Mike decided to give his address instead of his phone number.

During Marcum’s second, and last, appearance on Bell’s show in 1996, he said he was 30 days away from completing his “legal” time machine.

Mike Marcum vanished in 1997 and hasn’t been seen or heard from since. Shortly after Marcum disappeared a listener called the Art Bell show to talk about a strange story he had found. In the 1930s police found a dead man on a beach in California.

He was crushed to death in a strange metal tube, the man was unrecognizable and a mysterious device was found near his body. The caller said the device looked like a cell phone.

The End :)

I have read about that person who tried to travel time by bending gravity field.

I have one of those thingies. It has a hammer transducer and all the piezoelectric granite quartz "stuff" as well. It is spring loaded and when I push the button the hammer strikes the piezoelectric crystal, it sparks and lights my gas BBQ. Unfortunately my BBQ does not time travel.

Mike Marcum was an Art Bell guest a couple of times. As has happened all too frequently with Art Bell's "time travelers" (like David Anderson) he disappeared never to be seen or heard from again. Well, at least until the next time the "missing person" guest was penciled in as a guest.

If you never listened to Art Bell you really missed a hit show. Art would get sooo serious when, for instance, he'd speculate that Mike Marcum or David Anderson somehow got lost in time. If you listened closely you could actually hear him stiffling himself so as not to laugh outloud. It was a hoot! Art knew how to make money but he didn't believe a word of it. Unfortunately when Art retired George Noory took over. George really, really tried to make it sound like he was serious.

As for Art he learned some pretty serious lessons that caused both his first "retirement" and his second and final retirement. The lesson? In this alt-science world there are some doozie kooks out there who get real upset when you question their kook beliefs or catch on that you just stiffled laughing at their "theory". Some of them go beyond "doozie kooks" into the realm of damned dangerous and threaten your life. Others threaten both your life and your spouse's life. Which is exactly what happened to Art and why he retired for good. Pahrump, NV was spread out over the valley but didn't have much in the way of a population. Finding where Art lived was easy enough. Discovering that the gap between homes was 100 yards to a 1/4 of a mile made it even easier. And then there were also the thugs from the Philippines who wanted a piece of them as well.

Art Bell's Guest Fri Sept 4, 2015 Will Be "Madman Markham"

He will be on Midnight in the Desert tomorrow night!
"Midnight in the Desert" meant it was broadcast from Art Bell's home in Pahrump, NV. He lived a few houses down the street from my parents. That was his second guest spot. The "vortex"? Back in 1995 to the early 2000's "vortex" was the flavor of the month buzz-word for all things alt-science. No definition, just a buzz-word.

Of course some of us remember Mike Marcum. There should be threads here in the archive from the late 1990's or early 2000's.

Also:

"At that time he was only 21 years old and he was a student majoring in electricity."

I've never heard of "electricity" as a college major field of study. Electricity and Magnetism is one section of a physics or electrical engineering major but it isn't unto itself a major. Plus, "electricity" is half of the fundamental force of electromagnetism. One doesn't study electricity, at least in physics/EE, alone. Last, as a student more intelligent than his friends (what were you saying about his friends?) he should have been finishing his degree at age 21. His drawing is something that a high school rank amateur might put forth, not a third or fourth year college student studying physics/EE. BTW: On the drawing it appears that his last name is blacked out. It says Mike [blackout]. Zoom in with your scroll wheel and the blackout moves off. It just says "Mike". There is no "Marcum" under the blackout.

We did see his drawing some 20 years ago. Free energy? No moving parts? Electricity generated? No way - not even in a piezoelectric system. It is electromagnetism, not magnetism or electricity. The magnet and copper have to have relative motion between them to excite the electrons. The quartz crystal has to be struck by the hammer or squeezed under pressure (motion) to excite the electrons.

I genuinely miss Art. I was in middle and high school when I found him, and would fall asleep every night to whatever he was talking about. His bumper music was outstanding, and I still seek those songs out today.

Whether he believed them or not, his presentation of the stories is what made it interesting. He provided enough leeway to his guests to say what they wanted to say, but would also ask some pretty great questions that didn't disarm or derail their momentum too much. I doubt he believed much or any of it either, but it was great fun and he was a stellar host.

I 100% see this now. At the time, I didn't quite understand the drama or its root source, but there are some absolutely batshit people who take these things personally and seriously. It caused the shutdown of TTI once, and was part of why I handed Paranormalis over to Num years ago. Sometimes peace of mind is more important than having some fun.

Noorey has never been my taste in fringe. I'm sure he's a nice person and all that, but I just can't suspend my disbelief enough the way he hosts things. He's still on the air so it must be somebody's taste, but certainly not mine Maybe he's better at it now, but I've moved on. There's other sources for my weirdo fix these days. We have Twitch and YouTube.

MMM popped up on Paranormalis a while back. It doesn't look like he had much to say or reveal, but it was interesting to see him reappear after all these years. Worth a look for the curious:

Sorry I missed this last year.

Yes, I did get to meet him but not at his home. I ran into him at the market in Pahrump. We spoke briefly but the man was off-duty and "talking shop" would have been rude on my part. I also spoke to him on the phone regarding the shut down of Post-2-Post. I just missed him on my one guest spot on Coast-2-Coast AM because Noory was filling in that night.

Art was retired military (USAF) and made it know that he didn't want strangers randomly knocking on his door (because of the kooks and threats). He was armed. I don't recall him ever saying exactly what the issue was with the "thugs from the Philippines" other than they were after both himself and his wife, who is also from the Philippine islands.
