Unmoderated forum?

Given the expanded foundation we're launching in January, would you guys be interested in a "Lunatic Fringe" sort of forum where moderation doesn't take place?

Current Events and Politics forums need to be kept up with, stay on topic and adhere to all of our rules... But it'd be interesting to see the passionate debates and more extreme viewpoints that otherwise don't belong in "civilized" discussion.

This forum, while not moderated, would still need to adhere to a FEW rules:

*Nothing illegal

* No pornography

* No inciting or encouraging violence

* No threatening or harassing behavior, or encouraging others to do so

* No personal or confidential information

I'll leave this poll open for a month to see what you all think and we can discuss, then we'll go from there.

Exactly. This would be a subsection for people with more extreme viewpoints. I want to hear those opinions, but also want to keep the site friendly for newcomers (particularly the politics, current events and religion forums). Anyone using it to simply bitch about someone here would get their thread removed - Stuff like that is better left to private messages so things can get worked out.

From Wikipedia:

Lunatic fringe is a term used to characterize members of a political or social movement as extremists with eccentric or fanatical views. The term was popularized by Theodore Roosevelt, who wrote in 1913 that, "Every reform movement has a lunatic fringe."

With all the insanity 2016 has brought out in people, 2017 is going to be even more interesting. Giving voice to those viewpoints while still allowing us to stay on topic elsewhere would be interesting to see.

I do see where the one person who responded "no" would be coming from though (I can't see who voted what, by the way). It'd be carefully looked at, just not interfered with unless someone broke one of those cardinal rules listed above. If it ends up being that most people are against it, we won't pursue it as we're looking make the place interesting, not drive anyone away.

There's definitely that chance, but only if a) we don't do our jobs and b) nobody here helps us out by reporting things that break the cardinal rules of that forum.

While this forum would be exempt from the usual moderator oversight, the rules from my first post would still apply. Members would be able to opt-out (or opt-in) to this forum; what the default is depends on whether I want anything there to get indexed by search engines. Haven't thought that far ahead yet, but this would be a setting in your profile that adds/removes you from a usergroup who is able to see this forum in the first place.

This is NOT a forum for trolling. Stuff like that would be easy to spot a mile away and is easily dealt with, but I do see your point and that's something to think about. Could be that we don't do this until we're more active, but it's an interesting idea.

I think that this can be dangerous. If you get a real time traveler here, the ambiance from the traveler, can effect the board. Most don't have any idea how disastrous this can be if you happen to encounter a real time traveler.Every time that I'm on this board, I regard this as the same as taking a boat out onto the ocean.Watch what you say, do not be rude to others and most of all, don't take for granted, even if you feel that the client your talking to is a fake, relax and let your handling be too out of control of this acquaintance.

If this is a crash and burn social slop section, clearly label it as being such and for any potential time traveler not to enter. That's all I gotta say.

I would point out that there is nothing wrong with staying on task and focused-Not spreading yourself out too thin. To illustrate this point, I quote the line from the Master Chief John James Urgayle in G. I. Jane: "If I want your opinion, I'll give it to you".

I personally do not have the time to waste, and don't want others to turn me into a "social worker" in society, or in a forum.

A life choice, don't you think?

(I opt out now)

One further point-I have tested the limits of how the average population/person reacts to the cutting edge technology now emerging -that is time travel related-. Would prefer not to be shot at anymore, or have guns pulled as I "get you used to this" Don't make my job harder! In reality the average person is really not ready for this , and will react quite badly (and the more lunatic, the worse they react). Clearly you have not YET had my experiences.

Well, it would be lightly moderated for rule breakers, but there would be no nagging about being off topic, spelling, etc.... kind of just a "free" forum... right? Maybe it needs a new name?

If you can block mean people should you not block stupid people? May a person tell a lie about another person or yell that the sky is falling next week and not be called stupid? I can see a problem when a statement is made so far off the wall and is left to stand without another person having the right to call them on it. This is or was one of the reasons why I left TTI the first time. The next question would be if a person is a real time traveler we may offend them and loose the chance to learn more. It's a hard call to make for Cosmo and Paula. Know the risk before you make that call!

Unmoderated area is a good idea for super controversial subjects that some can't handle. Also good place to dump the horrible types

Have to remember that participation in an UNmoderated section of the forum would be a choice, not mandatory. Would think anyone that enters into a UNmoderated section, would do so knowing the risks. I would also think that time travelers who choose to reveal themselves would choose to make their revelations in the moderated portion of the site AND in the appropriate section.

Right, but nobody can come in and threaten to kill people, disclose national secrets, or post others' personal information -- just a few extreme examples.... Unmoderated to a point.... although I don't think I'd mind if Snowden had a few things to say. hehehehe

hahaha I think that's basically what it would be more or less. :)

Why not just call it the grown ups table?

If it's going to be a more... passionate? area for discussion, then I think we should do it. Maybe compleatly unmodderated is better. I know anarchy is a fickle, and often misguided philosophy, but maybe make some room for it around here. And if the experiment fails, then you clear the board, and start something new.

I think it may provide an alternative to the politically correct censorship we have seen from Facebook and Twitter lately. I quit using those forums because I think it should be a place to explore all ideas!
