Introduction
This is a revision of the United States presidential election of 2000.
The election was between Republican George W. Bush, then governor of Texas, and Democrat Al Gore, then Vice President of the US. In the current timeline, Gore officially wins the popular vote narrowly, with Bush winning the Electoral College vote narrowly, in a race being deemed “too close to call”. In this revised version of history, Bush wins the popular vote handily as well as winning the Electoral vote even more handily! In this revision, Bush has 53.6% of the popular vote compared to Gore’s 45.1%, for a victory margin of more than 8 percentage points in favor of Bush.
As a side note, the 2000 Republican primary of this revised history has John McCain and Alan Keyes competing against Bush, as is true in the current timeline. However, the race is a lot tighter in revised history, although Bush comes out on top in the end, over McCain due to Bush’s name recognition since his father was a former president, and over Keyes, who comes in 3rd behind Bush and McCain. In my revised history, Keyes is by then a two-term Senator from Maryland who declines to seek a third term and instead aims for the Presidency. Keyes is still behind Bush and McCain in 2000 because he’s new to politics at the presidential level at that time, and he’s just getting his feet wet over it. Nevertheless, the 2000 primary sees Keyes winning Delaware, Virginia, and of course Maryland.
The background to this election involves the aftermath of President Bill Clinton’s impeachment over the Monica Lewinsky sex scandal, and even more so Al Gore’s controversial stances, especially the one on the global warming hoax. If it were not for Clinton’s decent economic record working with the Republicans in Congress, Bush would win the popular vote by a landslide.
The revised election below is organized state-by-state in alphabetical order, for a total of 50 states plus the District of Columbia.
