Oxford in 2060 is a tumultuous place, with scores of time-traveling historians being sent back in time. Michael Davies is getting ready to travel to Pearl Harbor. Merope Ward is dealing with a slew of obstinate 1940 evacuees while attempting to persuade her thesis adviser to let her attend VE-Day. Polly Churchill’s next job will be as a shopgirl in the heart of London during the Blitz. However, the time-travel lab is abruptly canceling assignments and rearranging everyone’s timetables. And when Michael, Merope, and Polly arrive in World War II, things only get worse. For there, they face air raids, blackouts, and dive-bombing Stukas, not to mention a growing sense that not just their tasks, but the war and history itself, are out of control. Because the once-trustworthy processes of time travel are suddenly exhibiting serious flaws, and our heroes are beginning to doubt their most firmly held belief: that no historian can change the past.
