This is evidence that this is real http://sargel18.iwarp.com/oopa.htm

So what are the general feelings in here re: the direction you can travel in time? Is there a school that thinks you can travel to the future using the special law of relativity and a really fast spaceship but not the past or is it an anything is possible kind of discussion?
I personally belive that IF we are the present (reference to another post), but anyway, i belive that if we are the present then you can only travel backwards and you can never return to your proper time, So in my mind any time travel for a mission would be a suicide mission, unless you went to another world line then went back to your own but a few seconds from when u departed
What was the huge proof?
It was a hit and run post. As you can see GoogleRules tried the link almost immediately and it was dead. You can find him on X and YouTube (Sargel 18, Sarge18) but for Christ’s sake don’t invite him back here . Read his posts on X first and see why.
Idk eutychus. For me it is an “everything is possible”, but one way is far more difficult than the other… just the same as: heating a given space is far easier than cooling the same given space.
I believe reverse travel is a thing. Whether we would ever have the capability to do it artificially, im a bit skeptical. Not everyone here agrees with me… in fact I haven’t met anyone else who thinks this.
And idk why im commenting on another post from 2005…. I need to go to bed!
Nikola Tesla knew something. He saw the past present and the future at the same time!
Well, it turns out I must be pretty dumb…
It’s not only theoretically possible it is experimentally verified. You can travel fast which slows your clock relative to the “stationary” observer. That’s straight from the Special Theory of Relativity, 1905.
If nothing else, the clocks on GPS satellites have to be constantly re-calibrated because they experience time dilation effects while orbiting Earth. The time corrections are very tiny but for GPS coordinate accuracy which can be as fine as 1 meter the corrections must be made.
For potential time travel the ship has to be accelerated to close to the speed of light to get a meaningful reduction in travel time when, for example, traveling between stars or galaxies. But that sort of time travel to the future isn’t without a downside. Yes, a starship traveling at near the speed of light can travel from Earth to some place on another galaxy in a very short period of time, i.e. it can cut the time from a million years to 1 year (those are arbitrary numbers). The TT can visit for a while and return to Earth in a year. The TT only ages 2 years+. Unfortunately everything on Earth has aged 2 million years during the round trip. The effects of time dilation are cumulative and go only in one direction. It’s not symmetric. There’s no “traveling slow” to undo the effect.
How can we use this to go backwards? It seems like only huge gravitational distortion is required like being near a Black Hole’s event horizon.
No. We can’t use special relativistic effects to move backwards in time. Gravitational distortion is from general relativity, the theory of gravity. Moving toward a black hole is acceleration. Moving down into a gravitational well is a form of acceleration. From the perspective of an outside “stationary” observer you will appear to move more slowly as you approach the event horizon. Everything about you appears to move more slowly including your clock. You experience time dilation just like the spaceship in the earlier post. In this case the downside is literally down…down the gravity well and into the singularity. You die. From your perspective nothing unusual happens as you approach. You don’t experience any sensation of time dilation. Well, at least not until the tidal forces start stretching you into a strand of toothpaste or spaghetti. That’s going to sting a bit. Then you end up as a stream of atoms that fall into the singularity. At least that is what we believe happens. Once you can actually feel the effects General Relativity comes to an end because its results blow up to infinities. Quantum mechanical effects then dominate. The entire process is behind the event horizon, the mathematical models completely fail and wee have no way to send a message out to describe what happened.
Time travel to the past? We have theoretical solutions to general relativity. We don’t have any such solutions that include quantum effects. The solutions that we do have are completely theoretical and involve physics that don’t apply to this universe. As far as we know today time travel to the past is not possible. Fortunately the theories are stated in a form that can be falsified because there’s “always tomorrow”. What isn’t possible today might be possible tomorrow. That’s why we have the Scientific Method. It incorporates specific rules for designing experiments, how to state a proper hypothesis, how to write and submit a scientific paper and how to state the hypothesis so that it can be refuted if there is evidence presented to do so. If it isn’t falsifiable it is pseudoscience.
So don’t despair - there’s always tomorrow.
I can’t help but wonder if the person in the spaceship is really being stretched, according to the view of the participant, it would clearly look distorted/stretched to an outside observer. Would it even feel like being stretched, or would it feel like just being crushed as gravity grew stronger & looked only like stretched spaghetti from the outside.
Speculating here with a thought experiment.
At first you wouldn’t notice anything unusual as you crossed the event horizon, the point where moving away from the gravitational source requires moving faster than light speed. Depending on the mass of the BH it will take some specific time before you start feeling the tidal effects. Eventually, however, you will feel a bit of a sting as your arms, legs and torso are stretched along their length and squished from the sides. From a long distance the gravitational force lines appear to be parallel, but they really aren’t. The closer to the gravitational singularity they move the more apparent it is that the lines are converging to a point at the singularity. Visualize the longitude lines on a globe of the Earth. They converge to a point at the rotational north and south poles. Eventually your arms and legs are ripped off, your torso is stretched and squeezed until it breaks and finally you become a stream of atoms being captured by the singularity.
Hi, Darby! I beleive you have the correct interpretation, BUTT… “& that’s a big butt!
” I can’t just help myself & wonder?
What it would really be like & what you might see looking into it, or out of it… if anything at all. If it were possible to live through it, It may be a real curisosity to see!
I mean, if you could find a way to live through… heading over an event horizon, * into the singularity & what if anything, might pop out the otherside if it was possible! Even just breaking the theroies rules of the thought experiments are fasinating to me!
Thank you for your input, I always appreciate learning!

Crossing the event horizon isn’t a problem. If the black hole is large enough, and they are, you won’t feel anything abnormal as you cross the event horizon. This description ignores all other events that are occurring such as radiation emitted from molecules that are being ripped apart by the tidal forces. You won’t survive that.
What’s on the other side of the singularity? According to certain solutions to General Relativity there should be white holes that eject matter instead of attracting matter. So far those solutions appear to be mathematical artifacts - interesting but not real physics. Astronomers haven’t discovered any evidence of whiteholes. That doesn’t mean they don’t exist.
The issue, if they do exist, is the physics says any matter going into the blackhole will be spaghettified into a stream of single atoms. So exiting via a whitehole won’t be very helpful.
Bold of you to assume that you arent currently present within the event horizon/ gravity well of Sagitarius A?
You stated that in the form of a fact but added a question mark at the end. Is that an attempt to cover all bases?
Of course we are in the gravity well of the Milky Way central black hole, the Andromeda central black hole and every other black hole, star, planet, asteroid, etc. in the visible universe. And there’s a point to the comment or question whichever it was?
”Within the event horizon/gravity well” of them? Maybe you should offer a rigorous definition of what that means to you. An event horizon and a gravity well and completely different, but related, physical properties.
Ewwwy! I somehow imagine one of me going through the hole, & one of me simultaneously on the other side of a connected “white hole” with toast to be “buttered”!
Poor me! Hmmp? I’m terrible… forgive me! Well here we go, I can’t help but wonder now, if I stick my hand out just slightly into the/my mist… am I better with a bit of sugar, or salt!
I’m so sorry, everyone… I can’t help myself sometimes! My “thought experments” just wonder off weird ways!
Hope it’s help! ~QS
What has me puzzled is that I just turned 82 when it seems that I was just 25. Brand new to this great site.
